Format:  2 sessions, one indoors and one outdoors

Location: Session 1 will be held in the Spring Farm CARES Small Animal Building in the Learning Center. Session 2 will be held out in the Nature Sanctuary

Dates: Saturday, August 23, 9am -11am & August 30, 9am – 11am

Workshop Description:

This two-part workshop is designed for bird enthusiasts of all skill levels to strengthen their bird identification skills and deepen their understanding of avian ecology. Participants will explore not only how to identify birds by sight and sound, but also how to interpret their behaviors and understand their habitat needs.

• Session 1 (Indoor): A PowerPoint presentation and discussion introducing core ID techniques, observational tools (notes, photography, apps), and the ecological context of birds. The session will also emphasize conservation, habitat stewardship, ethical birding, and avian advocacy.
• Sessions 2 (Outdoor): Guided field outings at the Nature Sanctuary to practice real-time identification and evaluate bird habitats in diverse settings.

Topics Covered in Session 1:

• Visual and auditory bird ID techniques
• Tools for retention: notes, photography, identification books, and apps
• Identification by probability: habitat, seasonality, and range
• Behavior as both an ID tool and ecological insight
• Key habitat features for birds
• Understanding the conservation history of species
• Using eBird and record keeping
• Engaging in citizen science
• Ethical birding and conservation practices
• Advocating for wild birds
