Hero was born in the summer of 2017 and arrived at the farm at about 3 months old. Hero is aptly named and she is nothing short of amazing. It is very well documented how resilient animals can be. Hero took that to an art form. She was found on the side of a road after being hit by a car. She was picked up by a good Samaritan and we got her to a veterinarian immediately. But Hero had some very serious challenges. She had broken both of her back legs and had severe radial nerve damage to a front one. Only time could potentially heal the front leg. Both back legs had to be splinted and she had very strict crate rest only for several weeks. For a young kitten this was very challenging. The other challenge for Hero is that she was most likely born a wild cat and we discovered that she was very frightened of people. It took enormous trust on her part to let us tend to her splint changes and her care. But she did trust us and she did let us help her. Hero buddied up with another special needs kitten named Sadie who arrived shortly after Hero did. The two of them got to play and cuddle and help one another. Today, Hero is able to walk and run and climb on those back legs. Her front leg still is not normal but it has improved some. There is hope she will still get full use of it back. While still very timid, Hero has come a long way and as long as we are patient and move slowly, she will settle down and let us pet her belly while she purrs and purrs. Hero is a very brave girl.
