THE SPAY/NEUTER SOLUTION
Each year in the United States, millions of animals are euthanized for the simple reason that there are no homes for them. Shelters, rescues, and sanctuaries are mostly filled to capacity, and then some, trying to handle the load. It is an overwhelming problem but one that has a solution.
By spaying and neutering our pet and feral populations, we can eradicate this problem. Spring Farm CARES has two programs which directly address the spaying and neutering of dogs, cats, and rabbits.
Our Happy Hearth Spay/Neuter Program is a financial assistance program using a voucher system to help lower income families get their animals spayed and neutered. This program right now is limited to Oneida County so that we can start in one area and hopefully one day move outward from there.
The second program is our Feral Cat Program which is a trap, neuter, vaccinate and release program. This program is also limited to Oneida County at this time.
Spaying and neutering alone is not the complete answer, although it is a major part. It is equally important to educate the public as to the effects of pet overpopulation. We do this through our Humane Education Program. Equally as important, is for all of the animal welfare organizations to network, communicate, and share. All of us face the same crises, yet oftentimes it feels like we are fighting a battle alone. The reality is that if we were to all join forces and help one another, we'd be a much more efficient and stronger tool to help so many animals in need. We are addressing this through our Network Partners for Animals Program.
We look forward to a day when every animal is a wanted and cared for animal. Right now, we are a very long way away from that reality. Humanity, however, holds the key to change that. Together, we can make the difference.
